Other Appearance Information: Devin sticks to simple clothing in layers, usually in primary colors. His appearance is neat and well put together, even after a long nights work at the Pits. He likes black, which is not surprising considering he is blind. On that subject, yes, Devin does have a cane, but call it that and you will get smacked. It is his stick, a long silver pole used to feel in front of blind people for obstacles. Devin rarely uses said pole, preferring to rely on his Pokemon for guidance. His hearing is suburb, and his already excellent memory was only strengthened by his blinding. Devin knows exactly where everything is in his bar and in his home, making drinks with ease and without hesitation. Indeed, some newcomers to the bar do not believe he is blind at first, so fluid are his motions.
Devin’s eyes are slightly clouded, but this is only noticeable upon close inspection. His pupils in the grey irises do not react to light, no matter how bright, making his blindness more obvious to a close observer, yet Devin refuses to wear sunglasses like many blind people. Actually, Devin doesn’t like to advertise his blindness. He doesn’t mention it, others don’t mention it, everyone is happy. It is merely a facet of his appearance, like being short or tall.
Personal Related Information:
Personality: When Devin is in a good mood, it is most likely because he is in the middle of a good book. Under his gruff and antisocial interior, Devin is actually very smart. His sarcasm and blunt comments reveal his annoyance that others can’t seem to keep up with his lightning fast thought patterns. Now, one might ask oneself why such a smart guy is working as a bartender in the worst part of town. Well, Devin likes it there. He finds the bad crowd refreshing, as they make no attempt to try and hide their inner nature behind sunshine smiles and pretty words. If one of the people at the Pit doesn’t like his drink, he will tell it, straight up, to Devin’s face, no skirting about the subject, not trying to be polite or subtle. So another instance of a good mood would probably be in the middle of a busy shift at the Pit. Finally, probably one of the only other times Devin will be as close to happy as he gets is during a battle. There is nothing better than the agonizing cry of defeat as his opponent is pummeled mercilessly into the ground to relieve stress. Even if he doesn’t win, Devin still enjoys the mental and physical exercise that comes with a challenging battle. Oh yeah, a pretty woman will also put Devin in a good mood. Or a cute guy, he’s not picky. A nice lay does wonders with endorphins, doesn’t it?
Devin is not usually in a good mood. Most of the time, he exudes an annoyed air, as if the world is always doing something to irk him. Stupid people, which he counts as about 90% of the world’s population, both people and Pokemon, really, really annoy him. One sure-fire way to get Devin angry at you is to try and pity him, offer him help when he doesn’t want any, or ask prying questions. Here is another reason he likes the clientele at the Pit. They don’t care if he is blind, deaf, dumb, or dead, as long as he keeps the drinks coming. But this general aura of irkness pales when compared to Devin when he is really and truly enraged. He has seen the dark side of people, and fully embraces his own. He tears into people with razor sharp words, sometimes following up with fists, or even Pokemon. With his small stature and disability, Devin is at a disadvantage in a fight, but he can surprise a lot of people with his fighting ability. An enraged Devin is not a sight to be seen on an empty stomach, but luckily this event does not happen very often. The primary culprits for an angry Devin are someone breaking something of his, someone bad mouthing his family or Pokemon, or beating on a person who cannot fight back. Devin knows what it is like to be helpless, and cannot bear others harming someone who cannot fight back.
Now, anything else someone should know when interacting with Devin? Oh yes, don’t try and help him. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Do not pity him. He is used to his disability and has moved on, you should to. Also, he doesn’t know his younger sister Shey is alive. Don’t mention that fact, as he won’t believe you anyways. He goes by D or Dev in the bar, so people probably won’t make the connection. A Ranger and a bartender rarely travel in the same circle, especially when the Ranger is underage. Devin’s greatest regret is that he never got to talk to his family after he ran away. Most of his childhood was good, it wasn’t his parent’s fault the Devin wasn’t happy there. He wanted to say he was sorry, but Devin couldn’t stand facing his sister and telling her that he had failed, he had done bad things to good people. He knew he wouldn’t have been able to stand the judgment.
Currently Devin has no idea what he wants to do in the post-war world. He likes working at the Pit, but it is quickly getting boring. He has begun making forays out into the wilderness, testing his ability to travel. But Devin isn’t sure which side he would take in the continuing strife. Rangers, he thinks, are going to be destroyed. There are too many forces arrayed against the pitiful force. Besides, most Rangers, Devin thinks, are happy go lucky change the world in one day kind of people, which really annoys Devin. Team Pravus seems like an option, but the betrayal of being left for dead is not easily forgotten. Devin likes power, so the legendaries are a possibility. If only Mewtwo accepted humans, the legendary might like Devin’s outlook on the human race. And devin would have someone smart enough to keep up with him.
History: In the beginning, everything was happy, safe, and boring. Devin lived with his parents and younger sister on a breeding farm in South Remoor. His parents were good people, providing everything their children could ask for and more. But Devin did not like the boring life in a backwoods town, living on a farm. School told the young boy about all the forgotten wilderness out in the world, about big cities, Pokemon to captured, battles to be fought, and differences to be made. The intelligent young boy felt out of place in the small town, spending most of his time with his younger sister, Shey, exploring and getting into trouble. And they got into a lot of trouble, including somehow transferring all the desk in the school to the roof of the city hall, a trip of 5 blocks and over 10 stories high. The trouble Devin got into caused many fights with his parents, as he was eventually expelled from school. Devin didn’t care about the expulsion. He felt like he could learn more from books anyways, and took online courses which he aced easily, finishing the curriculum years early. But despite this achievement, Devin kept getting into more and more trouble, further straining his relationship with his parents.
By the time Devin was 15, his father got so fed up with his son’s attitude that he hit Devin. Just once, in the heat of the moment, but that was the last straw. Devin left his home and his sister, his best friend, declaring that he would never return to the backwoods hell hole, and that he would go out and be famous and make something of himself, then come back and rub that success in his parents’ faces. They had told him multiple times that Devin would never amount to anything other than trash, with his attitude and knack for getting into trouble. So the teen was off, full of ideas and ambition, with only the clothes on his back and a few Pokemon.
The road is not forgiving place. The hot headed teen got into a lot of trouble, mostly caused by his sarcastic mouth or smarter-than-you attitude. Although he eventually made it to Nada Citidel, it was not the family district the cold and hungry teen found himself in, but instead the dangerous and dirty slums. He had no money, no way to support himself, and was not prepared to life in the city slums. It is not surprising that Devin eventually blundered into the grasp of Team Pravus, where he worked as an errand boy for a couple of years until he could lie about his age to be admitted. During this time Devin was lonely, frustrated, and ever more ambitious. His time in Pravus gave Devin all his street smarts that he depends on so much in the current times, but also put him in the midst of the war. Devin’s quick thinking and battle strategy kept him out of major trouble for years, but the destruction and death the impressionable teen saw destroyed any shreds of innocence left in Devin’s psyche. The letters from his younger sister, still at home on the farm, were the only spots of light that tied Devin to his previous life, the better times. He kept his affiliation with Team Pravus a secret from his little sister, trying to preserve her innocence but also keep her memory of him clean and uncolored by the evil Devin had done. He only told her that he was fighting, but not what side he fought for, leaving her to draw her own conclusions. Devin lived this way, performing missions and errands for Team Pravus, for 3 years, until the darkness came.
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. It was a fluke, a one in a million chance that it would hit exactly like that, do exactly that amount of damage, that Devin would be in the exact wrong place at the exact wrong time. It wasn’t even a very large battle. Team Pravus was winning, when a misfired Thunder struck the young man, now 18. Everyone thought he was dead, but somehow he survived the initial strike. But even though he was alive, the trainer was not out of the woods quite yet. Devin had been deserted by Team Pravus along with the rest of the dead and wounded, but was picked up by a passing woodsman, who tried to he the severely hurt teen as much as he could with the limited means available. Team Pravus notified Devin’s family of his disappearance, but did reveal that they had abandoned the teen to die. Devins parents told his sister that her brother had disappeared, and was presumed dead, but left out her brother’s allegiance, wanting to spare there daughter the grief.
Devin fell in and out of conscious, battling a fierce infection with the help of the woodsman, for weeks. When he the fever finely broke, and he regained consciousness, Devin was blind. He doesn’t know if it was the initial lightning strike that fried the optic nerves, or whether it was the high fever and the infection that stole his sight. All he knew was that he was alone with a person he didn’t know, abandoned by his team, disabled for life. Devi withdrew completely into his shell, refusing to let anyone in. Luckily, his Pokemon were still there to help him through the coming months of adjustment to his new life. Devin got as used as a person can to being blind, and left the kind woodsman when the wanderlust and boredom hit him again. The final battle, the apocalypse, passed Devin by much the same as everyone else. He and his Pokemon survived, along with a few others, in a bunker set beneath the ground. Somehow, the teen got caught up in some of the rebuilding process, but once he could break free, something pulled him back to his childhood home.
There was nothing left. All Devin found was rubble, and many, many graves. Devin had thought he would not care that his old home was gone, or that his parents were probably dead, but he couldn’t help feeling a great sense of loss, especially over the supposed death of his sister. He doesn’t know that his sister along with the other survivors had traveled to the city and Shey had joined the Rangers. After leaving the ruins, Devin unknowingly followed Shey’s path to Nada Citadel, and got a job as a bartender in the Pits, the city’s roughest and seediest of bars. And there he stays, continuing to work nights, sleep in for most of the day, trying to come to terms with his past, pretty much biding his time until he figures out where he wants to go with his life.
Pokemon are the only constant. The first Pokemon Devin even caught was when he was 10, a Ralts and a Houndour he lured home with food and kept around until his parents let him keep them. They were his partners in crime along with his younger sister in all the trouble and pranks Devin masterminded. When he left home, Devin caught a Trapinch which evolved very rapidly, becoming the teens primary means of transportation. As a member of Team Pravus, he caught many other Pokemon, which were taken along by Team Pravus when Devin was left for dead. Devin caught a Shinx shortly after he was blinded, which evolved further throughout his travels, and now serves as one of Devin’s primary guides in cities and such. All of the Pokemon are powerful and skilled in battling, protecting their master with their lives, as well as serving as bodyguards at the Pit. People are very unlikely to start a fight when there is a Houndoom sitting right there.
Characters Pokemon:
Name:Illusion Species:(Fem) Gardevior Age:11 Level:66 Personality: Illusion is beautiful; there is no other way to describe her. She casts and ethereal glow throughout the grimy surroundings of the Pit, looking quite out of place. Indeed, Illusion doesn’t really like the overall dirtiness of the Pit, but puts up with it because her master needs her. Actually, nearly every action of Illusions can be traced back to Devin needing her. Beneath that calm exterior hides a heart of steel. Just try and cheat Devin and you find yourself facing a very angry Gardevoir, which is why she usually mans the cash register.
Attacks: Psychic Recover Energy Ball Shock Wave Hypnosis Dream Eater Focus Blast Teleport
Name:Cerberus Species:(Male) Houndoom Age: 11 Level:66 Personality: Cerberus is a deadly as Illusion is beautiful. The pair seem to complement each other perfectly, black and white, light and dark. Indeed, Cerberus is quite aggressive and very over protective of Devin and all of the Pokemon. He enjoyed Devin’s time in Team Pravus, as he got to be as ruthless and brutal in battle as he pleased. He has a bit of a rivalry with Shade over who gets to guide Devin around. During battle, Cerberus is a quick and able strike fighter. He hits hard with a variety of attacks, often disappearing and reappearing right behind the other Pokemon to finish them off with Faint Attack. Cerberus’ primary job is to sit in the shadows and look menacing to discourage misbehavior from the patrons.
Attacks: Dark Pulse Faint Attack Nasty Plot Solarbeam Sunny Day Flamethrower Sludge Bomb Payback
Name: Zephyr Species:(Fem) Flygon Age: 9 Level: 63 Personality:Zephyr is care free, relaxed, loves flying and riding the wind. She breaths a breath of fresh air into Devin’s sometimes depressing life each and every time he listens to her joy in the simple pleasure of flying. He remembers how beautiful she is as she glides over hills and through the air without even trying. In battle, the most frustrating thing to an opponent besides her speed and powerful attacks are trying to hit her. Zephyr just seems to not be there when the attack is about to hit.
Attacks: Earthquake Dragon Claw Fly Stone Edge Sandstorm Protect Aerial Ace Double Team
Name:Shade Species:(Male) Luxray Age:5 Level:60 Personality: Shade is the youngest of the bunch, and keeps to himself most of the time. He feels somewhat left out of the main group because he was the most recently caught. His loyalty to Devin can not be questioned. Shade frequently acts as a guide to Devin when Cerberus is unavailable or Devin wants to attract less attention. His battle style involves a mix of powerful attacks and status inducing moves to cripple his opponent before the final deadly strike. At the Pit, the Luxray is a big reason why there aren’t very many fights. A Houndoom sitting in the shadows and a Luxray lying by the door are enough to deter all but the most drunk of patrons.
Attacks: Fire fang Ice Fang Thunder Fang Crunch Toxic Iron Tail Thunder Wave Double Team
Role Playing Sample: Jorden, Tori of Team Rocket, wanted by every police organization in Sinnoh, stood on a large hill overlooking Jubilife City with a pair of binoculars grasped n his hands. He peered through them at the regular people, going about their lives, preparing for the upcoming Contest, uncaring, unknowing, unworthy. Jorden packed the binoculars away into his bag, and turned back to his Pokémon, taking a moment to observe, like a general inspecting his troops before a battle. Skree stood completely still, unmoving, barely even breathing, in the shadows at the base of a tall tree. The only indication of her excitement for the upcoming battle was a slight shifting of talons, each cutting their own furrow deep into the soft earth. For Skree, this was paramount to pacing back and forth, muttering constantly, to any other Pokémon.
Sado was in the tree above Skree, perched on a thick branch. Feeling his trainer's gaze alight on him for a moment, Sado let out a cackle and fluttered his large, ebon-black wings for a moment. He was eager and prepared for the coming events. Blood oozed out between Sado's right talons. Sado had deliberately gouged his talon on a sharp branch, and continued to grip harder and harder to the branch, opening the cut wider and wider. Jorden tore his eyes away. Sometimes Sado was just too much for even a seasoned veteran like the Tori.
It took Jorden a moment to locate Venom, but he eventually found the Crobat, concealed in the canopy of a tall evergreen. The shadows dappled Venom's purple coat until the Crobat blended perfectly into the bowels of the tree. Like his trainer a few moments before, Venom's eyes were fixed on the city below. Jorden smirked slightly, the most expression to flit across his face so far. Venom mirrored his trainer's mood perfectly; prepared to attack, yet cautious and knowing the value of patience.
It didn't take long to find the next member of his team. Jorden just followed the trail of broken twigs and holes in the ground until his eyes reached Crater. The Gliscor had a small bundle of flowers clenched in one claw, his tail holding onto a branch. He was hanging upside down as Gliscor are wont to do, and was quietly but efficiently tearing the flowers to shreds. The dark red petals fell to the ground in an eerie mirror of the blood falling from Sado's branch.
A tug on his trench coat alerted Jorden to the position of the fifth member of the strike team. Vapor the Stunky climbed up his trainer's side, his little claws finding holds somewhere in the worn, thick cloth, yet not cutting the skin beneath. The Stunky claimed his usual place on Jorden's shoulder and curled up, his actions releasing a bloom of fragrance that was at once poisonous and smoky at the same time. A small trail of soot revealed that Vapor had been practicing his flamethrower again.
And now, the last, the star of the coming attraction, Telepath the Ninetales. She was curled at the base of a large boulder, studiously cleaning her already pristine fur. Her large, liquid red eyes seeming to bore strait into Jorden's soul. Two of her voluminous tails appeared to possess lives of their own, twitching and curling and dancing to an arcane beat. She would be the ticket; she would be the pass into the Contest.
Jorden never doubted his choice. Tele would perform admirably, she always did. The scouting mission would occur without a hitch. Team Rocket needed more targets, and where else to locate rare, beautiful, valuable items and Pokémon than at a Contest? And just in case, those bumbling idiots Jesse and James would be there as well. There was nothing like the threat of an attack to bring out the strongest from a trainer. Those two could lure out the big prizes for Jorden to analyze and mark for future raids. It was so foolproof that Jorden hadn’t even told the nitwits their role. He had kept the details to himself. Well, to himself and to his team. And who needed anymore of a team than his Pokémon? Humans were imperfect. Humans made mistakes. But not Jorden, not Tori, and certainly not his team. With long, purposeful strides, Jorden descended the slope, recalling his Pokémon as he walked. There were plans to be made and targets to acquire. [/sub]
