Odoriko was not a happy little princess. All was not right in Riko-land. Right now she was sulking in the corner of the tent at the current campsite her master, Devin Maknama, had chosen for that night, listening to the sounds of the rest of the Pokemon and Devin eating smores over a campfire. Everyone was having fun. Well, everyone except for her. Not that she liked campfires much anyways. It was her own fault really, but the Snorunt was not about to admit this to anyone. Okay, so she shouldn’t have Power Snowed the ground in front of Devin as the rest of the group came back from a hike, but then again maybe he should have brought her a present for watching the camp for the whole day! It wasn’t her fault Devin thought she was too young and weak to keep up on a hike. She was strong enough!
…
Riko pointedly ignored the niggling voice in the back of her mind reminding her that she hadn’t done more than a minute of training since Devin won her from the casino. She was strong! She was super strong! She’d blast through the tent and put out the campfire and ruin their fun like they ruined hers!
Riko unleashed her most powerful Powder Snow on the tent. It barely stirred thanks to Devin’s tidy tent-pitching skills. Grr…so maybe she wasn’t that strong. Riko sat down on a sleeping bag in a huff. How could she get stronger? Train? But then she’d get all dirty and sweaty and gross…
Hmm…what were those things she heard about on TV? Battling makes you stronger, but there were those things called TMs…they gave you really neat attacks! That’s right. She would go out and find a Hyper Beam TM and blast away all those meanies!
Let’s see…now to get out of the tent and go on her little quest. Wriggle wriggle, and the Snorunt is on a mission!
A dark shape detached himself from the laughing group by the campfire to follow the little Riko. The group around the campfire was far from oblivious to Riko’s actions. Someone had to make sure the little princess didn’t hurt herself or piss off anyone important.
Riko traveled for some time. Well, it felt like a while to her little legs. In reality she only walked for about twenty minutes. Less than a mile, actually.
The little Pokemon was walking along, minding her own business, thinking about how she was going to get strong and beat up all the nasty guys and unfair trainers and Gardevoirs that were prettier than her and WAHHHHH!HHH!!!H!HH!H!H!!!
A Tropius nearly landed on the stalwart, brave traveling Snorunt. Needless to say, Riko freaked.
Riko shrank back, scuttling behind a convenient tree. She peeked her pointed head around the thick trunk, squeaked and shrank back again. Ok, what was a little Snorunt to do when faced with a big, giant, brown (icky icky color) and green (green was ok, Zephyr and Illusion were both pretty green, but brown and green was icky) monster! That Tropius might step on cute little Riko as she tried to sneak past.
Wait, Riko was supposed to be trying to get stronger! Hmmm….she should try it. That fat Tropius out there could never take even one of Riko’s powerful attacks! Even Cerb told her that one time that her Powder Snow tickled a little, and getting that from the Houndoom was like saying it stung and hurt and bled for hours and hours and hours on end!
That was it, Riko was decided.
The Snorunt jumped out and sprayed her strongest Powder Snow at the hulking Tropius! She cheered as the monster Grass/Flying type leaped into the air and flew off into the night.
Riko strode off triumphantly into the night, reassured of her awesomeness.
(The Tropius leapt up from its nice quiet dream of snoozing in the sun. Its foot had gone numb for some reason, which was annoying. So the Tropius decided to take a short flight to un-numb its sleepy foot. He resettled into its bed shortly after Riko left. The dark shape shadowing the Snorunt skirted the Tropius warily, but passed without waking the slumbering Pokemon.)
Riko’s successful adrenaline rush lasted for a time, but soon enough it wore off. The Snorunt was getting really bored. Her feet hurt and it was dark and scary and she wanted her Devin! Her mind went back to the camp, with the comfy tent, lots of food, and plenty of room to dance and Devin and the other Pokemon to blow Hail at.
But then Riko remembered how it had felt to scare off the Tropius. No, she had to get stronger!
The Snorunt tramped on into the night.
Ooooooooh lookie! There’s a clearing! And the clearing was glowing!
Riko followed the light, not even stopping to consider that she might have just wandered in a circle and returned right back to Devin’s campsite. But luckily for the Snorunt’s ego, she didn’t blunder back into her home turf, but instead into an empty campsite. A messily constructed tent and a small, well cordoned off fire inside a large clearing, a backpack resting against a tree.
Riko surveyed the scene for a moment, figured that everyone there must have heard about her magnificent destruction of the Tropius and run off like little cowards. She trotted over to the backpack and rooted around for a moment.
What’s this? Small, blue wrapped little candies? Small little candies that said ‘Rare Candy’ in little writing?
Whoopie! Riko knew exactly what these were! Rare Candies would make her strong in no time! And with none of that sweaty nasty work or dangerous battling!
The Snorunt piled up her prizes away from the nasty fire (it was only a little fire, basically just embers, but it was still nasty!) and set them up in a nice little pyramid. She was about to chow down on the four little candies when there came a shout.
A boy and his Numel burst into the clearing, shouting “Stop it you little thief!”
Riko blew out a cloud of frosty air in frustration before she turned to glare at the intruders. It didn’t matter to her that the boy owned the Rare Candies and it was Riko who was being a thief. That boy should just leave her alone and let her get stronger!
The boy skidded to a stop right in front of Riko and shouted “Hey, you get away from my Rare Candies. Those are for Numey!”
Riko stuck her tongue out at the boy and sprayed the Numel with a Powder Snow attack. She turned back to her little pile of prizes and brought one Rare Candy to her mouth, ready to get stronger and stronger.
The boy gaped at Riko’s audacity. “Grrrr” he growled “Numey, use Magnitude!”
The Numel nodded and shook off the frost from his nose. Numey called his name and stomped on the ground, sending out a fairly weak tremor through the ground.
Riko yelped as she was thrown from her feet, the Rare Candy sliding away from her grasp before she could eat it and get stronger.
The Snorunt jumped back to her feet and adopted a lecturing tone “Snorunt! Sno, sno, Snorunt!” She strutted back to the Numel and poked his nose, causing the other Pokemon to go cross-eyed. Then with a mighty “Sno-RUNT!” Riko let loose a mighty Shadow Ball right into Numey’s surprised face.
Poor Numey fell back under the onslaught, his short legs flailing in the air as he turtled for a long moment before regaining his feet. In the meantime Riko nodded satisfactorily at the Numel’s troubles and began to waddle to her discarded Rare Candies.
The boy shouted at the Snorunt, ignoring his Pokemon’s troubles “Get away from those! I need them so I can make Numey evolve and get strong!”
Numey wilted noticeably at his trainer’s words. How could the Pokemon keep fighting if his own trainer thought Numey was weak? But Numey tried to shake off his doubts, visibly pulling himself together before charging off for a Take Down attack. “NuuuuuuuuuuuMEL!”
Riko may not have trained much, but she was one of Devin’s Pokemon; she wasn’t completely hopeless in a battle. The Snorunt turned to face the charging Numel, sticking her tongue out at the other Pokemon before flickering away in the multitude of images that was a Double Team attack. Poor Numey charged right through a fake before crashing into a tree.
The many Snorunt images blew a raspberry at the downed and injured Numel. To add insult to injury, Riko charged up another Shadow Ball and sent it soaring straight into Numey.
This battling thing was a lot easier than she thought! Riko was actually starting to enjoy herself. Winning was a lot of fun.
The boy sighed, readying a Pokeball to return his Numel “Well Numey, I guess you’re worse than I thought. You can’t even defeat a little Snorunt. Now those Rare Candies, all that money, is all going to go to waste.”
What a snotty brat! His poor Pokemon is fighting as hard as he can against mean old Riko, and all the boy can think of is the money he is going to loose. That boy really didn’t deserve a Pokemon like Numey.
Poor Numey struggled to his feet, jumping out of the way as the boy tried to return his Pokemon.
“Numey, return! You’re way too weak to win!” the boy cried.
Numey refused to listen.
Riko thought that boy was mean. Devin never made her go into her tiny little Pokeball if she didn’t want to. Well, there was those times when there was a brawl at the Pits, but that was just so she wouldn’t get stepped on or burned as Cerb separated the fighters. That boy was trying to return Numey for no reason! Inflamed by ire, Riko sucked up air and blew a Powder Snow towards the upstart trainer.
The boy didn’t notice until the Powder Snow was almost on top of him. He crouched down, trying to dodge the incoming attack, but it was too late. He braced himself for the attack…but the wave of cold never came. The boy opened his eyes warily, only to see his Numey crouched in front of him! The Numel, injured as he was, had somehow managed to block the attack, taking the damage instead of his trainer!
“Oh Numey” the boy cried “You saved me!”
Riko pouted, why weren’t they paying attention to her? Oh well. She took advantage of the distraction to sneak towards the nearly forgotten Rare Candies.
The boy grabbed his stalwart Pokemon, uncaring of the thin film of frost over Numey’s body. “I take it back, I take it all back Numey. You’re strong, you’re the strongest little Pokemon I know! I can’t believe you would save me after how badly I treated you! I’ll never try to change you again, I promise!” The boy was actually crying. No doubt he thought his Numel was dead after the barrage of attacks.
What the boy had apparently not noticed was the fact that Riko was extremely weak. Her attacks may have looked good, but most of the damage to Numey had actually been the result of the failed Take Down attack. Numey was perfectly fine.
Better than fine in fact. Within his trainer’s arms the Numel began to glow brightly, his small domed form warping and changing. When the glare died away, there was a Camrupt in little Numey’s place!
The boy was flabberghasted “Numey? Is that really you?” The huge craggy Magcargo nodded before turning to the upstart Snorunt. It was time to show that weakling who was boss.
Riko froze in place, the Rare Candy once again halfway to her mouth. Where had that weak little Numel gone? That new Pokemon was big and scary!
But Riko’s confidence was still high as the sky from the beating she had apparently given to the Numel. She sucked in air and released a Shadow Ball once again.
The newly evolved Magcargo didn’t even flinch as the Shadow Ball splashed onto his face. He merely bellowed his defiance before releasing a powerful jet of lava from the holes on his back. The powerful Lava Plume attack arced through the night sky, raining down straight towards little Riko!
The Snorunt couldn’t escape. The lava was falling everywhere! Even another Double Team couldn’t save her now! What was she going to do? If that lava hit her she’d be melted, gone forever!
Riko could only huddle around her pilfer prize, those Rare Candy that had gotten her into such big trouble to begin with. She wished desperately that she was back with her trainer; her Devin. Devin always protected her. He always knew what to do. Hell, the Snorunt even wished annoying old Cerberus was there. She wished Devin would come swooping down with a Pokeball in hand to return Riko to the safe cool confines. She wished-FWOOSH!
The world erupted into smoke, ash, and heat.
