I need to give you guys a basic gist of what's going on in the story, otherwise well. Yeah. It's just...hm. You know?
Anyways, there are two characters.
Raaz Al'amar
Kestrel O'vann.
We're gonna focus on Raaz and his awesome-ness.
Raaz is the guy that I'm currently in need of some serious work on. I mean, I have a butt load of his history, but there's little details that bother me. And this is for a writing competition thing so he needs to be fleshed out as much as possible. Lemme see if I can sum him up fairly well.
Raaz Al'amar
Age: 26
Occupation: Corps Rider Captain
Personality: He's very smart, but keeps his intelligence to himself really. He's a laugh really, likes to crack jokes and can be extremely sarcastic in serious situations. He's actually a very open person to possibilities, though he tries to keep his talents hidden. He's a charmer, yeah, but he can also be annoying by how clever or curious he can be over other people. Let's just put it this way. He likes to have fun, and sometimes he inadvertently crosses boundaries when he does it.
History: He's actually a man that sought shelter from an old enemy in another country. The King took him in and since then he's become a loyal, trusted friend. He has no blood relations. No love interests either.
Other: This character is a magic EXPERT. He knows the insides and outs of magic, but he doesn't have the innate ability to use it. He acts as a kind of guide for Kestrel, who has magical capabilities unheard of for their time. It's a special kind of magic really, that no one else has. However, he's an expert on it. It's strange. But I need a desperate motivation for him to study magic.
Possible Information that Can Help:
Raaz isn't exactly what he seems to be. Yes, he's a valued soldier and yes he has some serious fighting capabilities. But obviously his skills came from somewhere, and he was running from someone else for a reason. In "the old days" he went around robbing tombs. Grave robbing. Whatever. He keeps most of the magical artifacts that he likes/finds useful, on his person or in his home. Obviously, this is a sin. Grave robbing isn't something that the Gods smile about. The King that took him in knows his past, and Raaz has sworn to stop it, and he hasn't been tomb searching in years. Maybe five or so, actually. But he's starting up again. Secretly.
I.E. He wears this ring. It has the ability to tell him when a person is lying, or when they are telling the truth. THESE kind of magical artifacts. Powerful stuff that no one should have.
So here's the deal. I need a reason why he's a magic junkie and why he goes around stealing this stuff. Basically...what the hell should he be looking for? Or why? Just cause? But hm. I dunno. We're talking about a man that's a wanted fugitive in a neighboring country, likely to be hanged if he ever returns. But Raaz is a good man. He's not evil. Misunderstood maybe, but not evil.
What would he need with magic, and why is he so interested in all of these things? Why would he risk damnation by the Gods to find this stuff? I need a good kinda reason...otherwise he's a useless character. Keep in mind that he keeps much of his past a secret...nobody knows he used to rob graves, save for Kestrel when she finds out. Only the King knows the real reason behind his motivations.
And another thing- this isn't about love. He doesn't rob to find some secret way to revive an old lover or anything. In fact, he's kinda meant for Kestrel, WAY later. I mean, after some serious character development from her. (Rushed relationships, wouldn't work here. I don't much like them either. Stuff like this takes time). So yeah.
A reason why he finds this stuff and robs tombs of magical artifacts...but leaves all the gold and jewelry and useless riches behind.
