Ok, so I'm writing a Real World KainexSkie thingie. Yes, I changed the names slightly, and no, its not finished yet, only about halfway there. Questions comments appreciated!
ES IST FINITO!
It was funny; watching the first time those two met after all those years. Stumbling over words, Cain’s hand ruffled her hair like he always had, but stopped partway through and letting his hand fall back to his side because it was too awkward to do that to the successful young woman standing before him. Now me and Sarah, our relationship hadn’t changed a bit. She just walked past and ignored me, Cain’s older brother, just like she always did.
“So kiddo, what do you plan to do now?” Cain asked, brushing his hand through platinum blonde, almost white hair and nearly dislodging the red sunglasses from his face.
I smirked and answered before Sarah had a chance to. “You didn’t hear? She’s joining your squad. Our widdle Sarah is all grown up and becoming a cop just like Uncle Cain!” Cigarette smoke curls around my fingers and ghosts across spiky hair a few shades darker than my brother’s. He hates my smoking habit, but I do it anyways. It’s my job as a younger brother, after all.
Cain looked into Sarah’s blue grey eyes, somewhat troubled by the news. “You sure about that kiddo? Being a cop is dangerous work…”
Sarah did not take this very well, not at all. “Cain, I’m not a little kid anymore” she sniped at him. “Treat my like an adult, like a coworker, pretend you didn’t know me before I show up for work tomorrow, whatever works.” With those parting words, she stalked off to her car.
I lowered my own sunglasses, although mine were yellow, and watched her definitely not child-like ass saunter off into the sunlight. That was Sarah all right, same as I remembered, but the outside was not the same. And just from looking at Cain’s reaction, watching his eyes also follow the sweet piece saunter out the door of the coffee shop, he was definitely noticing that too.
----------------------------------------
The next time I saw them, it was when my narcotics unit, and their organized crime unit were working together to bust a group of dealers. I had been working undercover for the last few months, and therefore hadn’t been there to see the development of my brother’s relationship with Sarah, but I did have my suspicions.
Imagine my not-so-surprised expression when I saw Cain hovering protectively close to Sarah, placing a hand unnecessarily on her elbow to steady her as she climbed down from the van. I smirked knowingly into my brother’s brown eyes from my superior height. He met my eyes and glared back, silently daring me to say something. But I didn’t have to, my point was proven when Sarah stumbled slightly over the uneven pavement and Cain was there, hovering by her side until he was sure that she was fine.
There was no time after that to talk, and no chance for me to annoy my brother about his feelings for Sarah. The raid was on, sheer chaos ensued, and suddenly I was in my element. The perps were captured, and for once I didn’t go home with another scar to add to my collection. Some of the others were not so lucky.
“Hey Alex, you still standing?” a member of my unit called out to me, the voice instantly recognizable as my darling fiancée, Shey.
“Standing still,” I called back, not able to keep a smile from spreading across my face. “You?”
“You know it,” was her reply, but instead of the usual exhilaration it always seemed to emanate after a successful drug bust, her voice was kind of sad, and very worried. “Alex…Sarah was hurt.”
Debriefing could wait until later. “Wha-does Cain know?” I asked as I turned and strode over to the many waiting squad cars.
“Yeah, he rode over in the ambulance. She’s fine, thanks for asking” Shey said sarcastically “or at least, the EMT said she will be. It wasn’t that bad; didn’t hit anything vital” she rattled off as she came over to join me, having to nearly jog to keep up with my long strides.
“You’d be surprised how much damage you can do and ‘not hit anything vital’” I responded, sliding into the driver’s seat and squealing off towards the hospital. “Cain’s probably gotten himself arrested for harassing the doctors by now, best go and be the good younger brother and save the day.”
-----------------
When we got to the hospital, I parked illegally in a handicapped space despite Shey’s grumblings, and quickly found Cain, still in his uniform and Kevlar vest, hunched over in one of those oh-so-uncomfortable waiting room chairs. I strode over and whacked him on the head lightly with my fist. “Whatcha so pouty for Cain?” I asked as Shey went over to check with the nurse about Sarah’s condition.
“She got hurt,” Cain’s voice was so quiet I had to strain to hear him over the ambient noise of the hospital. “She got hurt and I couldn’t stop it, I couldn’t fix it.”
I slumped into the chair next to him. “You knew this could happen as soon as she signed up for the job. You understand this job as well as I do; getting shot is always a possibility every time we step onto those streets. Look at me, how many times have I been shot or knifed on the job?” I grumbled as I took out my smokes, glared at the ‘Thank You for Not Smoking’ signs posted around the lobby, and put them back into my pocket.
“18, and there better not be any more or I’ll be grey before the year is out,” Shey griped as she slumped into the chair on my other side.
“Sarah is fine, they’re stitching her up now Cain, we can see her soon.” Her voice was quieter, gentler as she spoke to my brother.
When Cain answered, his voice was muffled because he spoke through his hands that still hid his face. “I can’t take this Alex, I was so afraid when I saw all that blood…I can’t loose her Alex, I just can’t.”
I snorted “Took you this long to figure that out Cain? Man, you are so thick sometimes. I knew that as soon as I watched you watching her, that time at the coffee shop.”
Shey whacked me on the shoulder. “Stop being so mean, Alex!” she scolded before turning back to Cain. “Don’t worry Cain, I’m sure she feels the same. All you have to do is tell her.”
My brother finally lifted his sorry head from his hands, but whatever he was going to say never left his lips, as the doctor chose that moment to come over and inform us that Sarah was out, and we could go and see her now.
Feeling somewhat generous after the successful raid, I nodded my head to the hallway and said “Go ahead big brother, we’ll wait for you here.”
Shey nodded in agreement and snuggled close to my side, settling in for the wait. Then to Cain’s departing back, she called out “And don’t forget to tell her!”
